It's one of those stories that's simple, tidy, and almost impossible to kill. The popular story usually goes something like this: “The U.S. government built ARPANET so communications would survive a nuclear war. ARPANET became the Internet. The end.” It's simple. It's memorable. It's also a massive oversimplification. Unfortunately, history rarely cooperates with tidy stories.
Nobody woke up one morning and “invented the internet.” It’s a myth that feels good, but it's pure fantasy. The reality is that the internet emerged from contributions by dozens of researchers over decades. We're talking about a messy, multi-generational assembly job.
Getting you to picture that Cold War Odd Couple the formed the partnership to create the ARPAnet is far more interesting than having me show you another diagram of network nodes surviving nuclear attack.
The People Who Built the Internet Should Have Been Enemies
The modern day mythology of the starts in 1957 with the Soviet Union launching Sputnik, the US doesn't want to be out done by the Russians, Eisenhower creates ARPA, the Advanced Research Project Agency, that spurs American technology research to create the ARPANET, Advanced Research Project Agency Network. The over simplified story, and the mythology takes off, the ARPANET was built to survive a nuclear war.
You'll hear it repeated in YouTube videos, blog posts, and even some textbooks.
It's a great story.
It's simple.
It's easy to remember.
And it's just accurate enough to survive fact-checking by people who never fact-check anything.
The Reality is more nuanced.
The most interesting part of the invention of the internet is understanding the world of the 1960s where Department of Defense money is being used on anti-war college campuses to develop the ideas that became the internet.
On one hand you had the California universities full of college students organizing demonstrations protesting against the Vietnam war. You would not think the universities would see the military as their friend.
But on the other hand you have various projects funded by ARPA, the Department of Defense, using these same universities to research the concepts that would create the framework for the ARPAnet.
If you study the history of the United States in the 1960s, you will see the unlikely cold war partnership that created the internet as ground breaking as the technology they were creating.
By the late 1960s, the campuses helping develop the ideas behind networking were also home to growing anti-war movements.

UCLA — University of California, Los Angeles
UCLA hosted the first ARPANET node and the first IMP (Interface Message Processor) ever installed.
SRI — Stanford Research Institute (Menlo Park)
SRI operated the second ARPANET node and received the first message ever sent over the network (“LO”). It was a major ARPA contractor and a hub for early networking research
UCSB — University of California, Santa Barbara
UCSB was the third ARPANET node, selected for its work in interactive computing and early graphics research. It joined the network in late 1969
You wouldn’t think these groups would get along. But they did. They cared about ideas.
And those ideas that were developed, computer time‑sharing, interactive computing, packet switching, became the intellectual soil where the Internet eventually grew.
You don't credit the person who first discovered fire with inventing the microwave and the modern day kitchen appliances.
What are all the things that happened from when Og the caveman discovered fire, and starting cooking food, to the modern kitchen of today?
It’s the same spark, same principle, but centuries of refinement, trial and error, and thousands of people later, you get a kitchen appliance controlled by a smartphone.
The internet is the kitchen, the power grid, the food, and the chef all working together. You can't just stare at the spark and call it a dinner.
The internet isn't a thing that was built from a single plan, it’s an organism that grew. The internet we know today was a process of constant growth, and failure, and constant building upon what came before. The ARPANET was important because it became a testbed for ideas that later enabled many different networks to communicate with one another.

And if there's one thing I've learned, it's this: Technology history loves fairy tales.
One inventor. One breakthrough. One moment that changes everything.
The problem is that almost none of it happened that way.
The Internet wasn't invented in the 1960s.

The whole story?
Not even close.
