Someone has to imagine the impossible before engineers can build it.
Our story today starts with a psychologist.
A man who, in 1960, described a future where people would sit at screens, sharing information through computers connected all over the world.
He even gave it a wonderfully over-the-top name: The Intergalactic Computer Network.
No, he wasn't talking about aliens.
He was describing something that looked remarkably like today's Internet, years before most people had ever seen a computer.
He didn't build the Internet. He did something arguably harder.
Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider, was known to his colleagues simply as “Lick” and by all accounts he had an infectious enthusiasm for ideas. He didn't just write about the future. he got other people excited enough to build it.
He wasn't an electrical engineer. He wasn't a programmer. He was a psychologist.
In 1942, he earned both a Ph.D. in psychoacoustics and a doctorate in psychology from the University of Rochester. After that, he spent seven years at Harvard as a research fellow and lecturer in the Psycho Acoustic Laboratory, studying how people perceive sound and how the human mind processes information. That early work on human perception shaped the way he later thought about computers, not just as machines, but as tools meant to work with people.
That background turned out to be exactly what made him different.
Long before Silicon Valley became a household name… before personal computers… before email… before the World Wide Web… Lick had a vision…
Most computer scientists of the 1950s saw computers as incredibly fast calculating machines. Feed them a stack of punched cards, wait for the answer, and hope you didn't make a typo somewhere along the way.
J.C.R. Licklider worked at MIT in the 1950s on a Cold War project called SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment), a computer-based air defense system.
SAGE showed him: “Computers don't have to sit in a basement crunching payroll.” They could be interactive. Lick looked at those same room-sized machines and saw something else entirely.
His vision saw people and computers working together, each doing what they did best. In 1960, he published a paper with the rather unexciting title Man-Computer Symbiosis. Licklider jokingly called his vision the “Intergalactic Computer Network.” It sounded like science fiction in 1960. Today, it sounds remarkably like the Internet.
He envisioned a globally interconnected set of computers through which everyone could quickly access data and programs from any location.
The ideas inside would quietly influence the next generation of computer scientists for decades. Because of this vision, Licklider is often called “Computing's Johnny Appleseed” for planting the seeds of the research that ultimately led to the birth of the Internet.
In October 1962, Licklider was appointed head of the Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) at ARPA. The IPTO founded research that would eventually lead to the development of the ARPANET.
Cold War military projects were not new to Licklider, his new position gave him the opportunity to promote his vision of interconnected computers.
He got MIT talking to UCLA. He got Stanford talking to Berkeley. He encouraged researchers to share ideas instead of working in isolation.
Larry Roberts, the principal architect of the ARPANET, credited Licklider's vision as a major influence on the project.
Licklider wasn’t flashy. He was a true geek. He quietly published a paper with one of the most geeky titles imaginable, Man-Computer Symbiosis.
Licklider described the future. He created the vision that convinced the people who built the Internet that computers had a much bigger future than anyone imagined.
