who-invented-the-internet-just-the-truth

Who Invented the Internet? No Script. No AI. Just the Truth.

Who invented the internet? The answer isn't one name, it's a story of forgotten visionaries, government projects, and a myth the tech industry keeps repeating. This is the real history of the internet, from ARPANET to the forgotten geeks who never got credit.

What makes a good video answering the question, “Who invented the internet?”

When I searched YouTube, I found videos that were all over the map. Some wandered far from the question. Some tried a little too hard to be clever. Others were simply wrong.

My original goal was to make a quick, straightforward video that answered the question. Then I ran into a problem: there isn't a quick, straightforward answer.

Back in the late 1990s, when I taught introductory internet courses, I began every semester with an hour-long presentation called “Who Invented the Internet?” Some students loved it and told me it was the best part of the course. Others thought it was a complete waste of time.

Such is the nature of history.

For this video, I went back to those days and recreated that introduction from memory—condensed into a single episode. No flashy editing. No manufactured drama. No AI-written script. Just the Cranky Cynic sharing a story I've been telling for decades.

If you've ever wondered who really invented the internet, this is where our journey begins. And if you're willing to look beyond the myths, there's a fascinating story waiting to be told.

History remembers the legend. Geek History tells the whole story.

Sorry if some of the pages having missing graphics or a bookmarked page is missing. We are migrating our site over to DokuWiki from Drupal. The last major overhaul of our site was in 2016, and we were due for some freshening up.

The collection of material for the study of geek history dates back to my early days in technology as far back as the 1970s. You will find specific footnotes and references on many pages with links to current websites. Anytime a claim is made, or a fact is stated from a website or blog that does not appear to have firsthand knowledge of the subject I make a note to follow up on it. I can assure you that anything I have written is based on verification of facts from a source as close to the events and individuals as possible or multiple sources of information from leading publications or references.
